Chief Murphy Paul was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Mayor President Broome shared that she is proud of his progress. Maybe she should share what the word progress means to her.
A toddler was recently shot and killed near an apartment complex pool. A 16 year old died in the same shooting. Homicide rates are up by about 24-percent. Baton Rouge is a war zone. News stories of violent crime are as normal as the weather report. Why was Paul appointed to the Board of Directors?
Mayor President Sharon Weston Broome had this to say:
“Throughout his tenure as the Chief of Police, Chief Murphy Paul has served as an example of what it truly means to be a public servant. His dedication has not gone without recognition – the International Association of Chiefs of Police announced Chief Paul’s appointment to the At-Large #1 position through 2024.
I would like to formally congratulate Chief Paul for his appointment; I know our officers, our Baton Rouge Police Department, and our entire community here in East Baton Rouge Parish are proud of the work he has done within Baton Rouge, and the progress he will bring to police departments across the nation.”
Broome is out of touch with officers and the community if she honestly believes her words echo their thoughts. A few officers already quit over poor leadership at Baton Rouge Police Department. As of September 27, 2021 there were 119 homicides in East Baton Rouge Parish. As of the same date in 2020 there were 96. Is this the kind of progress the community needs?
