The Transgender… Hoax?

On this, the International Trans Day of Visibility, let us consider: Could large-scale social movements like transgenderism be nothing more than social experiments designed to test society’s willingness to accept ideas detached from objective reality?

Several months ago, I was drawn in to observe an intellectual firefight between two provocative thinkers, Michael Rectenwald and James Lindsay. These two scholars had begun publicly trading PhD-level ideological grenades that were highly complex arguments steeped in philosophy, politics, and rhetorical theory. At first glance, these musings seemed esoteric (that only people of their intelligence level could comprehend). Yet, upon deeper examination, their clash (if we can call it that) opened my eyes to the profound and unsettling possibility that is the theme of this article.

Rectenwald’s piece titled The Woke Right specifically triggered this realization, which dissected how ideological extremism could reshape perceptions of reality itself. In this essay, Rectenwald highlighted how Lindsay successfully tricked a “Christian nationalist” webzine into publishing a cleverly disguised, reframed portion of Marx and Engels’ Communist Manifesto as conservative Christian thought.

Lindsay’s “hoax,” detailed in his anonymously published article The Liberal Consensus and the New Christian Right, was shockingly effective. It demonstrated that even deeply held ideological beliefs could be manipulated if presented in familiar language and framed to align with preconceived notions.

Institutional Influence and Childhood Indoctrination

This got me thinking further. Suppose it’s possible to dupe intelligent adults into accepting something as antithetical to their beliefs as Marxism dressed as conservatism. What else could society be persuaded to embrace as reality, especially when institutions like education and government directly fund its propagation with your tax dollars?

Consider the rapid rise of transgender ideology. It has become highly visible, controversial, and institutionally supported nearly simultaneously across the West. The scale and speed of this ideological movement (particularly targeting young children through public libraries, schools, and other taxpayer-funded authorities) strikes a similar chord. Could it be nothing more than a sick societal “experiment” to test just how far ideological hoaxes can reshape social realities?

The concept of intentionally reshaping social norms isn’t unprecedented; history offers striking parallels to modern movements. Consider the influential and often troubling legacy of Edward Bernays (Sigmund Freud’s nephew), whose pioneering work in public relations revealed just how effectively mass manipulation could shape public perceptions and alter societal norms. His work consisted of busting taboos for such ignoble causes as selling incredibly unhealthy and addictive products to the public. Bernays’ work is even credited with the Central Intelligence Agency’s covert operation to topple the Guatemalan president, Jacobo Árbenz.

Legislative Actions in Louisiana

This ideological battle is raging in Louisiana, especially (but not necessarily limited to) where local bastions of intense liberalism exist. Numerous dust-ups have driven conservative lawmakers to move swiftly to protect children. Several recent laws have emerged in response to growing public concern:

  • State Representative Gabe Firment‘s (R 8.10) House Bill 648 (2023) became law after a veto override, banning irreversible transgender treatments for minors.
  • State Senator Beth Mizell (R 8/10) successfully passed the “Fairness in Women’s Sports Act” in 2022, prohibiting biological males from competing in women’s sports.
  • In 2024, Representative Dodie Horton (R 9/10) sponsored legislation (HB122) that Governor Jeff Landry quickly signed. It restricts public school employees from discussing sexual orientation and gender identity with students.
  • Of course, who could forget Jeff Landry’s Protecting Innocence Project from 2023?

These and other legislative reactions underline a widespread societal discomfort. There was and is concern that government-backed promotion of transgender concepts to young children might be responsible for encouraging identity confusion and an increasing prevalence of gender dysphoria. The parallels to Lindsay’s intellectual “hoax” become clearer: powerful institutions (once trusted to be neutral) have been actively reshaping young minds’ perceptions of fundamental realities such as gender.

Silencing Dissent and the Backlash

Critics argue that transgender ideology, bolstered by institutional authority, silences dissenters by morally vilifying them. This is a similar tactic we all witnessed with the COVID-19 vaccine debates, where skeptics faced institutional censorship. This enforced ideological conformity sparks intense political backlash, notably visible in recent political realignments, including Donald Trump’s resurgence.

After all, what would have been the odds of a Donald Trump re-election if the Democrats had behaved? What if they had treated voters as reasonable, independent-thinking adults? What if the Democrats had allowed people to make their own decisions about undergoing experimental medical procedures in the name of public health? Instead, we saw our government conspire to compel every citizen to follow their decrees while silencing anyone who disagreed. That silence came in many forms: public shaming, threats to livelihoods, arrest, prosecution, and even government collusion with social media companies to reduce the visibility of unapproved opinions,

What if Biden hadn’t manipulated Title IX, forcing states to sue over his demands that men be allowed to compete against girls in sports? Not only that, but for girls to be forced to undress in front of these men? Then we see organizations like the American Library Association and their supporters effectively referring to concerned parents as book burners, censors, and even Nazis! Instead of working to bring people together in areas where we agree, one side made a concerted effort not just to win but to subjugate the other completely.

The imminent public backlash was swift and sweeping.

What do you think?

Although we just grazed the broader concept that sparked this unsettling idea, I’d like your thoughts. Are people so gullible that they can be mass-manipulated into accepting (as fact) ridiculous but well-packaged misinformation? Would those people be so taken in as to demand even their family members be arrested, jailed, humiliated, and driven to bankruptcy?

Through Bernays’ methods and beyond, history has repeatedly shown us how frighteningly easy it can be to manipulate people into passionately embracing harmful ideas. Given this, could the modern transgender movement itself be just another cleverly designed societal experiment to test our collective susceptibility to ideological influence?
