We are excited to announce that Superintendent Doctor Cade Brumley will be our October Speaker. Join us at noon on Thursday, October 10, at The Roumain Building.

Dr. Cade Brumley is a product of Louisiana schools, and he has invested his career into improving students’ lives and moving his state forward. Dr. Brumley has served Louisiana as a teacher, coach, school leader, and school system leader. He was appointed Louisiana State Superintendent in May 2020 during the height of the global pandemic. Under his leadership, Louisiana has accelerated student academic outcomes and expanded educational freedom.

As State Superintendent of Education, Dr. Brumley has:

Advanced Louisiana to its highest national rankings: Louisiana K-12 education has moved from 46th to 40th in U.S. News & World Report. Louisiana’s 4th graders led the country in reading growth, and the state’s overall ranking moved from 46th to 42nd from 2019 to 2022 on NAEP (The Nation’s Report Card)

Ensured Louisiana was a national leader for academic recovery following the pandemic: Harvard and Stanford’s Education Recovery Scorecard found that Louisiana was one of only three states where reading achievement exceeded pre-pandemic levels and called the state’s math progress “remarkable” for outpacing the national average.

Led statewide COVID-19 mitigation efforts, resulting in the 3rd most aggressive return-to-school plan in the United States, according to the American Enterprise Institute

Supported recovery efforts in the aftermath of the 2nd & 3rd largest hurricanes in Louisiana history

Earned most significant year-over-year increase on state assessments since 2016, as students increased three points in both ELA and math, and Louisiana returned to its pre-pandemic School Performance Score

Continuously championed, alongside advocates, for early childhood education, including expansion of quality seats for families regardless of income.

Launched the “Louisiana Literacy” initiative, providing system leaders, educators, and families with innovative tools and resources to support children on a statewide push for a reading revival

Developed the “Fast Forward” initiative, shifting the high school experience by allowing students to graduate high school while simultaneously earning career credentials, a full apprenticeship, an associate degree, or a coherent set of courses leading to a four-year degree

Overhauled revised K-12 Student Standards for Social Studies around a Freedom Framework that represents the majesty of the country while recognizing the quest to become a perfect union

Expanded school choice options for parents by growing the charter school portfolio as well as supporting increased funding for the Louisiana Scholarship Program

Created the “Louisiana Comeback” campaign, a coordinated, statewide effort to recover learning loss caused by COVID-19 and catastrophic hurricanes

Before joining the Louisiana Department of Education, Dr. Brumley served as Superintendent of Jefferson Parish Schools, the largest school system in the state with more than 51,000 students. Dr. Brumley also served as DeSoto Parish Schools Superintendent for six years.

Dr. Brumley holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, a Master of Education in School Administration from Louisiana State University – Shreveport, and a Doctorate of Education in School Leadership from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.
